Youth-Police Engagement Workshops in Bushwick!
RAP’s Youth, Police, and Community Initiative has moved forward this fall with engaging community conversations and Know-Your-Rights workshops at the Bushwick Hylan Community Center!
Young people from the Bushwick area joined together for three nights to take part in workshops facilitated by lawyers from O’Melveny and Meyers. The groups had engaging discussions about the impact that policies such as Stop and Frisk and police presence in their schools and communities has had on their lives. They also spent time discussing what their rights are as young people when they find themselves in a Stop and Frisk situation.
The workshops culminated in a Community Conversation facilitated between the youth participants and police officers from the local precinct. The conversation was an opportunity for both youth and police to share their experiences, and is just the starting point for elevating youth voices around their experiences with police.
RAP is working to expand these community conversations to all 5 boroughs!
